Get to know Mike:
As I reflect on my journey with Den of Lions, it's incredible to think that I've been part of this family for 17 years, joining the club at the young age of 5. Soccer has been my lifelong passion, from playing as a kid to continuing to play today. One of my fondest memories was scoring a crucial free kick from 35 yards out during a state cup match for DOL.
Portuguese
My Portuguese heritage runs deep, shaping my love for the game and inspiring me to become a coach. The joy of helping young players realize their potential and witnessing their growth motivates me every day.
When it comes to coaching, I prioritize individual player development, fostering a positive team culture, and instilling accountability. Discipline is crucial in maintaining team cohesion, with rules enforced and consequences upheld. From team bonding activities like bowling nights to helping players overcome challenges and build confidence, every moment on this journey has been fulfilling. My coaching philosophy aims to shape not just better players, but better individuals, instilling values of accountability and personal growth.
Coaching has been immensely rewarding, highlighted by achievements such as sending numerous seniors to college soccer programs and winning state cup championships. Cristiano Ronaldo has always been my idol, epitomizing greatness and inspiring me throughout my career.
Do you have any pregame rituals?
Before each kickoff, I have my pre-game rituals, including carefully selecting my shoes and saying a prayer.
If you weren’t coaching what do you think you’d be doing?
If not coaching, I might have pursued a career in construction, but soccer has always been my true calling.
Fun moments:
Amidst the seriousness of coaching, there have been moments of hilarity, like Tiago's spontaneous goal celebration, that bring joy to our journey.
